At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One telegram from J.D. Callahan to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 20, 1973. Callahan supports the impeachment of President Nixon. He forwards a copy of his letter to President Nixon and writes, "Stop your squirming and resign like a decent human being instead of hating on and shaming the entire US with your new show biz antics."
