At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Roy G. Pulver to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 24, 1973. Pulver is against the impeachment of President Nixon. Pulver mentions that he served as a county youth chairman for Moorhead and writes, "When the smoke from this battle is cleared let the Republican party be found as always, standing or lying by Nixon's side."
