At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Burton Richard Wolf to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 20, 1973. Wolf supports the impeachment of President Nixon. He compares Nixon to Hitler and Stalin, and writes, "The White House must be cleaned out before it becomes so black with deceit in crime that it can no longer stand as one of the symbols of our country."
