At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Evan Ravitz to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated 1973-1974. Ravitz is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "I have pity for Mr. Nixon as a man who seems to have been caught up in the worst vested interest and repressive ideas of our time, and would not like to see him in jail."
