At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Ruth Q. Sellers to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 11, 1973. Sellers is against the impeachment of President Nixon. She includes a Biblical ink drawing by Jim Young on the rear page. She comments that the "ACLU is spending considerable money for full page newspaper ads, including therein a coupon to fill in and mail; and the head of AFL-CIO is instruction Union members."
