At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Virginia Johnson to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 12, 1973. Johnson is against the impeachment of President Nixon. This letter is addressed to Peter W. Rodino, with copies forwarded to multiple Congressmen including Carlos Moorhead. She mentions the ACLU, and comments, "If a witch-hunt is to be instigated, then let it begin, appropriately, in the state of Massachusetts."
