At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Deborah Finer to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 4, 1973. Finer supports the impeachment of President Nixon and compares Nixon to a criminal. She writes, "The Nixon administration has made it "perfectly clear" that all law and order ends at the doorsteps at the White House."
