At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Alexander V. Berkis to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 1, 1973. Berkis is against the Impeachment of President Nixon. He mentions the firing of Archibald Cox and appointment of Gerald Ford. He also includes three different articles published in newspapers throughout the country written by himself. He writes, "We are very proud of the great achievements of his administration. Those who speak about his impeachment are irresponsible."
