At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Elmora Dean to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated 1973-1974. Dean is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "We see no constitutional justification for impeachment. We regard the pressure by certain members of Congress and the press for such action as politically motivated."
