At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from John E. Sheridan to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 30, 1973. Sheridan supports the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "Whether it is by political espionage and sabotage, burglary, wiretapping, clandestine military operations, secret investigations, illegal arrests, political prosecutions, or vicious attacks on a free press, all of us are threatened anew each day."
