At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Mrs. Clifford McCray to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 31, 1973. Mrs. McCray supports the impeachment of President Nixon. She calls Nixon a dictator and writes, "We want Nixon out of the White House; out; O-U-T!! And no pension for Nixon please!"
