At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One engraving of Francis Villiers dated circa 1808. Half seated portrait of Villiers with a pastoral scene in a window behind him. Based on a painting by Anthony van Dyck with Francis and his brother George Duke of Buckingham. In this engraving only Francis is shown.
