At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Susan Prowell Graeff and Raymond James Graeff to Leonard Eugene Graeff dated June 19, 1944. She is answering the June 10th and June 12th letters Leonard sent. Mentions meeting a veteran Mr. Brooks, who was stationed in the South Pacific. He had participated in several battles with no wounds but caught malaria and was sent home. She also mentions another man who contracted malaria in a camp in Florida. They sold Leonard's car for $875. A lot of cars were priced around $650 and dealers were willing to spend $700.
