At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One undated cabinet card of a portrait three girls who have been emancipated from slavery in New Orleans, Louisiana. Text on card identifies them as "Rebecca, Augusta, and Rosa." Reverse side contains the photographer's name, "M.H. Kimball" and that funds will go "to the education of colored people in the Department of the Gulf."
