At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One booklet entitled, "My Military Missal," written by Reverend Joseph F. Stedman dated 1942. Item contains abridged masses from the official "Missale Castrense" used by chaplains in all branches of the Armed Forces. Includes the Mass of the
Most Holy Trinity, the Easter Sunday Mass, the Mass of Our Lady, the Mass "In Time of War," and the Mass for the Dead. Also offers points of advice to Catholic soldiers and information on the "World-Mass-Clock." This would be used by soldiers unable to attend mass due to military service or the absence of a chaplain. Features numerous small diagrams illustrating various masses and other tenents of Catholicism and annotations regarding the history of mass rituals.
