At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Campbell Kathleen to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated July 30, 1974. Campbell supports the impeachment of President Nixon. She emphasizes that it is of the utmost importance to utilize impeachment for Nixon otherwise that function of government fails to be useful for future Presidents. The author insists that Moorhead follow through with Constitutional law and writes, "If he goes free we are giving every future president carte blanche to do as he damn well pleases."
