At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Skeete to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated July 27, 1974. Skeete supports the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "You are a jackass! If you really want to save our Constitution, you can start by IMPEACHING NIXON! So quit wasting my time and yours with your cheap lawyer tricks. Wise up, clown."
