At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Sheila R. Devereux to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated July 29, 1974. Devereux supports the impeachment of President Nixon. She condemns Moorhead and tells him things will change despite his incompetence and writes, "You certainly choose to ignore the fact that the President did not uphold the Constitution."
