At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from John Swan to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated July 24, 1974. Swan a WWI veteran supports the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "I fully realize that I am not going to change your thinking, speeches, or voting record. However I must attempt to register my great disappointment in your speeches, thinking, voting, reasoning in our U.S. House of Representatives and particularly as a member of House Judiciary Committee."
