At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One typewritten letter from Carlos J. Moorhead to his constituents dated August 21, 1974. Addressed to those who have urged the impeachment of President Nixon. This particular letter is addressed to Dr. and Mrs. Havlik shortly after Nixon's resignation. On the right side, a handwritten note says that this letter is a sample.
