At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Getrude E. Miller to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated January 10, 1974. Miller is against the impeachment of President Nixon and writes, "This letter to you from me is to state and declare that I am opposed to the impeachment of our fine President Richard M. Nixon." Additionally she requests that Moorhead vote against a bill H.R. 8053.
