At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One undated letter from David Seid to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated 1973-1974. Seid supports the impeachment of President Nixon. He mentions that Vietnam is an "illegal war" and writes, "Even if you do not agree I think you will agree he has lost the ability to govern because the people have no confidence in him or his administration."
