At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Quintin R. De Young and Dana E. De Young to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 4, 1973. The De Youngs support the impeachment of President Nixon. Quintin comments he is a professor of psychology at Chapman College. He mentions that his students, in addition to him, are becoming skeptical of the government, and writes, "We sincerely believe that the impeachment of Nixon has been mandated by his own actions."
