At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Dorothy D. Gordon and Robert S. Gordon to Richard Nixon and copied to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 29, 1973. The Gordons are against the impeachment of President Nixon. They assured Nixon that they "have complete faith that enough loyal Republicans and independent discerning Democrats will come to your support if need be to nullify any efforts to discredit you from any quarter."
