At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Mary Bright to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 6, 1973. Bright supports the impeachment of President Nixon. She reassures Moorhead, "I would first of all like you to know that I have never been a radical or extremist of any sort, nor could I be called a "Nixon hater."
