At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from A. B Wilson to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated 1973-1974. Wilson is against the impeachment of President Nixon. He believes that the press is ruining the country and writes, "We are sick and tired of your congressmen (?) [sic] and the press continuing this foolishness. It is about time that folk of your [illegible] more consideration towards making this a better country instead of trying to ruin it."
