At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Edward Bette to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated 1973-1974. Bette supports the impeachment of President Nixon. He mentions Nixon's disregard for separation
of powers, firing of special prosecutor Archibald Cox, and the national security surrounding impeachment. He writes, "I can ask in the interest of our national security that your urge and participate in the procedure laid out by our forefathers to examine lawfully whether the present trustee of the office of the presidency be worthy of his post."
