At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Leslie Foote to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 25, 1973. Foote supports the impeachment of President Nixon. She believes in separation of power and that the rules laid out by our forefathers should be followed. She also writes, "Impeachment proceedings are the means for providing President Nixon with a fair trial. It is my belief that he deserves this consideration."
