At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Diana Strain to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 27, 1973. Strain supports the impeachment of President Nixon. She reports she has been a life-long Republican, and writes, "Since I am as stubborn as most Americans, I am not admitting that I was wrong. . . . The people of the United States do not deserve to have a president who is corrupt."
