At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One telegram from Thomas Vetter to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated November 4, 1973. Vetter is against the impeachment of President Nixon. He sends this letter on behalf of a combination of Republicans and Democrats. They believe despite differences of opinion that "our President should not be impeached no matter what our opinions be concerning domestic affairs in foreign policy we feel that he is unsurpassed."
