At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Chad F. Calhoun to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 27, 1973. Calhoun supports the impeachment of President Nixon. He mentions the firing of special prosecutor Archibald Cox, and Nixon forcing U.S. Attorney General, Elliot Lee Richardson to resign. He states "I've had it! The country has had it! Congress must now takeover. Congress must now decide your future -- decide and chart the country's future"
