At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Carl Handy to Congressman Carlos J. Moorhead dated October 30, 1973. Handy is against the impeachment of President Nixon. He claims there is a lack of evidence against Nixon. He writes, "the news media for the most part have used every means possible to make him look guilty."
