At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Richard Miller to Leonard Eugene Graeff, dated October 19, 1943. Richard jokes about friction between them now since he is in the Army and Leonard is in the Navy. He says if he had a choice he would have joined the Navy too, although he has been very lucky in the Army. He just saw a movie short feature on the training at Great Lakes. He requests that Leonard send him pictures with his new haircut. He wishes Leonard good luck with the girls if his hair looks as bad as Richard's did.
