At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One pamphlet entitled, "Constitution of the State of Virginia and Ordinances Adopted by the Convention which Assembled at Alexandria," dated February 13, 1864. Includes new text that bans enslavement unless it is for a criminal offense. Also creates a new mandate regarding taxes, "And it shall now allow any county, city or corporation, to levy or collect any tax for the payment of any debt created for the purpose of aiding any rebellion against the State or the United States."
