At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One poster entitled "Tankers Aweigh" printed by Autocar, dated 1941-1945. Poster features a scene of soldiers and airmen using an Autocar tanker to refuel a bomber. There are two planes with smoke trailing from them and other planes flying around them in the background. The poster promotes the vehicles Autocar is suppling to the Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Corp. The poster reads in part, "keep your pledge to the U.S. Truck Conservation Corps. Your trucks are your own, but their life belongs to the Nation." It also has the title of the poster in pencil on the back.
