At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One wirephoto released by United Press International dated September 16, 1962. Shows eight Vietnamese soldiers, wading through water in full gear, carrying weapons. The attached press release states that the Vietnamese troops are crossing the swamp in preparation for an attack against the Viet Cong. The release mentions that United States' involvement is expected to increase once the rainy season ends in September. The back of the photo is stamped with United Press International information.
