At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A letter from Sir Herbert Croft to a unknown recipient asking on behalf of a friend, Mr Schomberg, for introductions to Mr Neeker, and Mr Broussonet. Schomberg would be taking a long vacation in France and was very interested in the "politics of the present eventful moment" meaning the beginnings of the French revolution.
