Volume one of a series entitled, "Information respecting the history condition and prospects of the Indian tribes of the United States," published in 1853. Contains the results of a study commissioned by Congress to collect statistics on the condition of indigenous peoples of the United States. The contents of this volume is divided into seven parts; General History; Mental Type of the Indian Race; Antiquities of the Untied States; Physical Geography of the Indian Country; Tribal Organization, History and Government; Intellectual Character and capacity of the Red Man; Population and Statistics. Including a section entitled, Census Returns of the Indian Tribes of the United States. The volume also contains an appendix. This first volume is signed by the author and inscribed to Clamor Hagedorn.
