At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Mary Storer from George W. Storer dated Fifth Avenue Hotel, New York, October 3, 1860. Describes his sightings of noted politicians staying at his hotel such as President Fillmore, congressmen, and others; visiting with friends; expresses wanting to visit Central Park, and Greenwood Cemetery. Mentions that on his way back from Brooklyn in a omnibus they were stopped by a police officer because there "was about thirty thousand 'Wide Awakes'" that were parading with banners and torches. Also attached as a note expressing his wishes to buy a place in New York.
