At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One pamphlet entitled, "Record and Opinion of the Supreme Court of Florida. In The Case of The State of Florida Ex Rel. George F. Drew Against Samuel B. McLin, Secretary of State, Clayton A. Cowgill, Comptroller, WM. Archer Cocke, Attorney General, of the State of Florida," dated 1876. The pamphlet is regarding the election of 1876. The case concerns the board of canvassers of Florida. Drew contests that votes from Jackson, Hamilton, Manatee, and Monroe County were not properly counted by Samuel B. McLin, Clayton A. Cowgill and William Archer Cocke, members of the canvassers board.
