At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One wirephoto entitled "Confrontation" taken by Associated Press dated March 9, 1965. Image is of protestors approaching a line of state troopers armed with clubs on a highway. Wire transfer information describes that state troopers blocked the protests outside of Selma, Alabama. There were an estimated 2,000 people who turned back a judge ordered a stop on the march.
