At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One black and white photograph dated July 19, 1965. Pictured is a street where one building has been destroyed. Also in the photograph are people standing in front of the businesses and walking on the sidewalk. A news caption attached to back of the photograph reads, "People mill around a portion of the Hough section of Cleveland, site of rioting and looting during the night."
