At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Susan Prowell Graeff and Raymond James Graeff to Leonard Eugene Graeff dated September 19, 1943. Leonard's mother writes about speaking with Robert Winemiller's mother on the phone and that she gave her his address. She also included Robert's new address at Camp Phillips, Kansas which he provided in a card to Leonard's mother. Mentioned Kenneth called hoping to speak with Leonard and that she gave him his address. She asks about what things Leonard is up to and mentions that Raymond ran Leonard's car for a short period of time. Signed, "Mother & Daddy."
