At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter dated Okinawa, November 20, 1957, addressed to his wife, Kay Pemberton. Writes about typhoon "Lola" missing them, a storm that carried winds travelling up to 225 mph, encountering Colonel Timmons, an old acquaintance from Hong Kong; hanging out with his friend Jerry Marlowe for five days, stopping by the Post Exchange and lists what is available for purchase. Includes a drawing of an envelope with an address to get ahold of him directly.
