At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Richard J. DiChristina from Joyce Robinson dated August 1, 1969. Pertains to family updates and details on her upcoming trip to visit him. Joyce writes that there is a bus strike preventing her from getting their airline tickets. She hopes he can come home with "us" because "it would be great to fly with you." Joyce briefly discusses their relationship, stating "Hon I don't want to find anyone else. Really." She cannot wait to see him in six days and closes by assuring him they will get married "some day. O.K?"
