At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A banknote worth fifty sen and used in areas occupied by the American military in Japan. There is a note at the top marking it as five cents.

The decorative engraving on the front side is printed in blue and on the reverse it is printed in brown and red.
