At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter from Robert A. Winemiller to Leonard Eugene Graeff dated November 14, 1942. Robert conveys that he misses women, and one in particular that he does not name. Life on base consists mostly of "drilling, training, & etc." He received a new helmet, leggings, blouses, belts, and rifles. In a recent firing exercise Robert got fourteen out of twenty.
