At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

One letter addressed to Roseann from William E. Johnson dated February 2, 1976. Pertains to a visit to New Jersey the day before. He reminisces about acquaintances of theirs and places they had visited together. He mentions he went to a real estate office. He was interested in a property and enclosed a business card for the White Sands Motel where they had once stayed. He describes how Seton Hall has changed and how he tried to see the Drama Director, Gil Rathburn, in order to find out about a friend, Ron Young. Mentions names of new residents and visits to old friends he made in Packanack Lake.
