At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

A story discussing 17-year-old Kenneth Whitlock, from Lucy Addison High School, winning the Junior Chamber of Commerce regional oratorical contest. He is the first African-American to do so. The article also notes he was the president of the state NAACP Youth council and received a national award for the NAACP on the same day as his contest win.
