At the Institute’s core is the Gilder Lehrman Collection, one of the great archives in American history. More than 85,000 items cover five hundred years of American history, from Columbus’s 1493 letter describing the New World through the end of the twentieth century.

Newspaper clipping from unknown newspaper. Front is black and white photograph of planes and a man. Caption says: "late in 1943, when Kelly became a training center for instructors, these Vultee 'Valiants' joined its fleet." Handwritten notes say "BT's" in top right and bottom center. Reverse is ad for Rohm & Haas Company, which sells transparent plastic for planes.
